So here we are, Alex is now one week old! We managed to meet this milestone with another yesterday...Alex breastfed exclusively for one feeding (which hasn't done yet) AND it was on the right side (which he hates to feed from)!! I know that doesn't sound like much, but for a kid who wouldn't breastfeed in the first place, this is a big deal. We have also managed to decrease his consumption of formula in half, since he is really starting to catch on to the breastfeeding.
We are still getting peed on occassionally, but Alex is starting to sleep for longer periods at night and requiring less stimulation during the day. Last night he went to bed at 9pm, and I had to wake him for his feeding at 1am, then he slept again until 3am. We had to keep checking him because it was so odd for him to sleep that long...We thoiught something was wrong! We also made the mistake of not going to bed, thinking he was going to wake any minute...We missed oiut on 4 hours of sleep, just worrying!
Like everything, it is live and learn...Now if he goes to sleep at 9, so will we!

Our first day home
We were discharged from the hospital on Friday, May 25th. We managed to get 3/4 of the way home before Alex woke up hungry in the car, so we got to listen to crying the rest of our trip home. We managed to get through the evening ok, with Dan only making one trip to Safeway for food and formula, when we noticed around 9pm that Alex had some green goop in his left eye. He was really fussy, wouldn't breastfeed at all, and wouldn't sleep either.
We tryed until 10 or 1030 to console him, but no matter how many times we fed him, changed him or rocked him there was no soothing him. We even tried the "he'll cry himself to sleep method", but this just got Mom crying too. We tried a soother (even they are poo-poo'd in the first 6 weeks), and there was no luck there either. By this time as well, we had changed his clothes at least twice due him peeing all over the place (we hadn't quite figured out the trick to preventing this). Dan got peed on once, and so did I.
At 1030 I finally had Dan go to the store (a second time) to get a thermometer to make sure that Alex didn't have a fever. While he was gone, Alex started crying which started me leaking breast milk. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but he refused to breastfeed despite the milk coming out like Niagra Falls. So, I spent a good half hour walking with Alex in one hand, and holding a bottlein my other hand to my breast collecting the leaking breast milk.
Alex, didn't have a fever, but I called the Maternity ward anyway. They told us just to go to the clinic in the morning, which we did, and found that Alex has his first eye infection. Alex peed on himself once at this point, which helped us give him his first bath since he got home. This went on without much fuss, and was our one success. After much more fighting, we finally gave up on breastfeeding and just gave hime formula for his feeding at 12am...It then took us another hour to get him to sleep.
We finally crawled into bed at 1am, and just as I fell asleep, Alex woke up because he was wet. So I changed him, then went back to sleep. 20 minutes later, he was awake because he was poopy, so I changed him again. At this point he peed on me again, and necessitated another outfit change. We changed his outfit 5 times in 12 hours. It was time for another feeding, so I fed him a large amount of formula to make him sleepy, and once he was asleep, I crawled back into bed.
This finally worked. Alex slept until 545am, when I woke him for his next feeding. He ate, then went right back to sleep, and slept again until 830. When I came back to bed at 6, Dan asked me what time it was, and when I told him, he got mad at me for not waking him up to help out...I figured it was better that only one of us wasn't getting any sleep instead of both of us.....and then I said "you get to watch him while I sleep today" which Dan was in agreement, and did for me on Saturday.
Saturday went a bit smoother, and we finally got the breastfeeding going again..We still have to top up with formula, but we will be weaning Alex over the week to 2 weeks to get him to breastfeed exclusively. We are slowly adjusting, and hope to have a regular routine in about 2 weeks. Despite the tears (mine and Alex's), we are very happy he is here. Ruby is his little "nana", bringing him toys when he cries, and protecting him from anybody that walks by the house. She also has to be right beside him at all times when he is in the living room with us. She is exciteable, but we hope that will change soon.
Keep checking in...I will post some pics when time permits..right now one feeding runs into the next most times, so I don't get much of a break (20 minutes max).

Alexander James is here!!
So we planned to be induced on the morning of May 22nd at Langley Hospital. On Monday the 21st, I got up and started having contractions at 10am. They were every five minutes but bearable, so I figured it was probably false labor. Dan and I spent the morning running errands to get ready for Tuesday, and at 1pm when we got home, I was still having them and they were starting to hurt. After having a shower and waiting some more, I finally phoned the hospital at 2pm to say I was coming in.
We got to the hospital and found that I was infact having contraction every 5 minutes, but they weren't that strong or painful enough for them to admit me. I was still able to talk through them, and they were measuring as mild anyways. They did an exam and found I was still only 1cm so they sent me home.
Dan and I didn't race home...We stopped and put gas in the car (good thing we did), Dan got a movie and we picked up a little bit of food. I was planning to go home, eat, take the Ativan the hospital gave me and go to bed, again to prepare for Tuesday. We cam home around 530pm, and I was in the process of talking to Elysia and making my food when my water broke!
Right in the middle of my kitchen with windows open and everything, I checked to see what it was that came out. The amniotic fluid was green, and so we immediately called the hospital. I ran to the bathroom while Dan called, and I panicked because the fluid would not stop coming out, and I was afraid to move of the toilet. We managed to get me into clean clothes, into the car and on our way to the hospital in about 5 minutes flat.
Dan drove 120 the whole way to the hospital. The 45 minute drive took 20 at the speeds he was going! We almost made it to the hospital when my contractions really started to hurt, and were coming every 3 minutes. We met my mom at the front door at 6:20pm, and she took me upstairs, where they found that it was my water that had broke, and after being checked I was now 2cm dilated.
They quickly took me into a room, admitted me and set up all the monitors. I couldn't figure out what some of the fuss was about, because I thought at 2cm I still had a long way to go. It turns out that Alex's heart rate was very low, and he was in distress. Once they repositioned me and gave me some nitrous for pain (which is awesome by the way), his heart rate came up and everyone was happy again.
At 730pm I was checked again and found to be 3cm dilated. The doctor talked to me about pain control, and stated (matter of factly) that because of Alex's heart rate I would not be allowed Morphine, Demerol or Fentanyl. So my choices were the nitrous or an epidural. Since I was in quite a bit of pain with just nitrous, I opted for the epidural. It was heaven on earth, and I will never again speak badly about epidurals!
At about 930pm, I was checked again and was already 5cm. and at 1130pm I was 8cm dliated. I finally got to 10cm at 130am, and they let me start pushing. Two problems ensued....The epidural was starting to wear off, and Alex's head was not coming down because it kept getting stuck on a cervical lip. So, for about 1/2 and hour I had the doctor pushing the lip back while I pushed the baby out. Unfortunately, this did not help, and after 2 hours of pushing Alex had not moved.
By this point I was exhausted, in a lot of pain and tired of the whole process. While the staff were trying to decide if they were going to let me keep pushing, Alex's heart rate dropped again. This made the decision for them , and the obstetrician was called. She came in and assessed me, and determined that Alex was stuck and I needed a C-section.
By this point I had no epidural, wasn't allowed anything for pain, and the contractions were coming almost a minute apart. I was in so much pain that I was continuously sucking back the nitrous, and pretty much screaming the whole time. It was around 430am when they took me to the OR, and got me prepped.
Alex was born at 5:33am, Tuesday morning. The obstetrician told us we had a boy (with a very big head), and my reactions was "I knew it was a boy!!" Dan was able to go over to the warmer and see him, cut the cord, and bring him over to me to see. Once I had spent some time with him, they took him upstairs to be weighed.
Alex weighed 8lbs 10oz, and was 21 inches long. We thought for sure he was going to be at least 9 1/2 pounds, just becuase I was so big! The obstetrician said to me (while doing my stitches) that she normally tries to break the ice by telling the mother that the baby's head is too big and to blame it on the father. She said though, that after looking at Dan, she realized he actually does have a big head, and it really was his fault!!
We had a very interesting stay in the hospital.. A few trying times, but overall a pleasant experience. I am happy to be home, but scared at the same time that something will go wrong! Thankfully I have lots of support out there, and I am appreciative of all of it.

Prodromal Labor
So I haven't been online for the last couple days just because I've been trying to rest as much as possible. For one reason, I am being induced on Tuesday (only 3 more sleeps!!) but I also have been having the wonderful experience of prodromal labor (also known as false labor) since about 9pm Friday night.
For those who don't know what prodromal labor is, it is contractions that are every 7-10 minutes, lasting about 60 seconds long with a mild to moderate amount of pain. The problem with these contractions is that they do not progress in intensity or frequency, which means they do not result in the birth of a baby. They also come and go, meaning they could last for hours, and then just all of a sudden stop, but then start right back up again in a short amount of time. They do cause some cervical changes, but not enough to kickstart real labor to get past 3cm.
While this may seem good, I mean you have to get to 3cm at some point so that you eventually get to 10cm to deliver the baby, it is very tiring and frustrating. I thought for sure that this may have been it when after having contractions all last night, I woke up this morning still having contractions. However, I waited to see if they would get closer together or more painful (usually the sign it's time to go to the hospital), but instead they went away. Then they came back a couple hours later. The stopped. You get the picture.
I really thought it may be time to go when after a nap I could hardly move. I thought Dan was going to have to get me out of bed because my back and stomach hurt so bad. But no, the pain went away along with the contractions. I have come to the realization that if this baby is going to be born before my induction on Tuesday that I won't even know I'm in labor, and I will only be ready to go to the hospital when the baby is crowning (which is a little too late). I guess that would be a good thing, but at the same time too it wouldn't be. I am so glad you only have to be a first time mom once. I feel like such a tard most days.
Well, I am going to to say, this has certainly been an experience. Dan and I watched the 3D ultrasound DVD today, and it again became real that in just a few short days I will be having a baby.....I can't even begin to describe the emotions I felt, and the impatience at not having the baby yet. But, like I said before, good things come to those who wait.
Oh, and Elysia told me today that her friend Marta delivered this morning.. She was due on the same date as me. So now everyone who got pregnant last year have had their babies except me. It seems we are always the last todo everything (get married, have a baby)...I guess we're not trend setters, we're trend followers!
Ahhhhhh...only a few more days............

Still waiting...........
I thought for sure we would be posting about our new bundle by now, but like most first born babies, ours is now officially late. After visiting the doctor on Tuesday, I spent a wonderful night having contractions and lots of lower back pain that didn't let me get a lot of sleep, and I was sure I would get up in the morning and be on my way to the hospital. Truth is, I continued to have contractions off and on all day yesterday, but nothing that got worse, closer together or even lasted long enough to suggest that labor had started on it's own.
I must admit though, that as the day went on yesterday, I got more and more uncomfortable, and again wondered if I would wake up in the morning and be so uncomfortable it would be worth a trip to the hospital. Well, here I am and I feel fine. I'm a little tired, but no contractions, no pain, no nothing. So, I plan to spend the day doing the same as yesterday---watching tv and passing time. I do have to go for a non-stress test today, but otherwise it is just another day on the calendar.
Dan and I both said last night that the ups and downs of the last month have sort of made us both depressed, and that any small thing with this pregnancy that would normally make us excited now doesn't mean much because we've had so many false starts. Don't get me wrong---we are both EXTREMEMLY excited to be parents, and our moods will change as soon as the baby is here, but we are both wearing thin on the emotions due to the long wait. Although, all good things come to those who wait, and they are usually worth waiting for :)
Like my dad said....Enjoy this while you can, because before you know it, it will beover and you'll miss being pregnant..He also said that before you know it it will be your kids having a baby, and he said that it is sad and joyful all at the same time. I tend to agree with him--One thing having a baby has made me realize is that one day I will be in my parent's shoes, and I'm just not ready to be older yet! It makes you realize your own mortality.
Well, I'll continue to blog, and hopefully when the time comes, I'll be able to throw a quick blog in about us leaving for the hospital, and then it'll be baby pics after that!!

The doctor's visit
So after going back to the hospital last night and finding that I was NOT leaking amniotic fluid, we came home and went to our regular doctor visit today. After looking at oiur options, we booked an induction for next Tuesday, May 22, 2007. That is, if I don't give birth before then. After having the routine exam, we found that I am currently 1cm dilated, 50% effaced, and the cervix is anterior. Also, the doctor scratched my membranes in hopes that it would get labor started. Hopefully we can get these things going in the next day or so, but otherwise it will be next week for sure.
I am now excited!!I wasn't before, although it was from fear of labor (which is still there) but I am ready for the challenge!!

The Hospital Visit
So on our way to the hospital for a non-stress test we stopped for lunch at Arby's for one of our last "bad" meals, because I swear we are going on a diet after the baby is born. I went to the bathroom, and noticed that my pants were wet. Unusual, and unexpected. We had lunch, then headed to the hospital.
I explained that I felt no gush or trickle, but that this was unusual for me. They checked but could not find evidence of amniotice fluid. Still not having contractions, and the baby is doing great. However, because there is the possibility that I may be leaking fluid, we have to go back to the hospital at 7pm for a ferning test. That will determine if my water has broken or not.
So, if my water has broken, then we have 24 hours to deliver the baby...If it has not, then I think we will discuss the possibility of induction versus c-section, instead of waiting for my appointment tomorrow.
So, I will post again once we know what is going on..If I am being induced and staying at the hospital, then you will not hear from me for a couple days.. Otherwise, I'll post when i get home tonight.
Ciao

Mother's Day
So, it is Mother's Day. Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there!! I am still pregnant (no surprise there). I thought that for sure today would be the day, but, alas, I was wrong.
I spent yesterday doing yardwork in hopes that it would get things going, but it didn't work. At least I got the yard work done. I slept off and on all night, which is not unusual, since I don't really sleep well anymore. I woke up this am, and started getting ready for lunch, and Dan being the wonderfully thoughtful husband he is bought me flowers and a card! He feels that despite the fact that the baby is still in my womb, it is close enough to my due date to be considered a real live person, and therefore I am a Mom.
We then went out for lunch with our moms, and while we were waiting to be seated, I thought my water broke--false alarm, everything is still intact. Since then, I've had a few odd contractions, but still nothing to suggest this baby is coming anytime soon.
Erin phoned me yesterday and said she had a dream that i had the baby, and so I should expect to go into labor in the next 24-48 hours---this has happened with everyone she has known who is pregnant, and so far she is 100% right......Let's see if she can maintain that average:)
Tomorrow we go for a non-stress test, and then to the doctor on Tuesday, so I'll be back to let you all know how things go.
till then.........................

Ok, I'm bored. I've watched tv all day, the house is as clean as it can get, and I've had enough. The baby can come already!!!
I actually had a pretty bad couple of contractions last night, and I've been pretty crampy today, but nothing regular to suggest that I am in labor. I unfortunately have been experiencing morning sickness again, and have been sick the last two days (and it's not just nausea..I've actually gotten sick--which sucks when you're nine months pregnant). I've got a lot of pressure behind my pelvic bone, and I think this is just the baby's head getting in there good.
OK, enough complaining..I had a dream a couple of months ago that I gave birth on Mother's Day to a baby girl weighing in the 8lb range, and then I had a dream this last week that the baby was born and me an d my mom were shoping for clothes..The clothes just happened to be dresses...........We'll see if the whole "dream" thing is right. I personally think it is a boy, and I always have. Most of the old wives tales point to a boy, but again, we'll see who is right.
For anyone who has been pregnant, Did you ever feel like you were going to be pregnant forever? I think it is now my life to be pregnant and it will always be that way. I can't even imagine what it's like for those people who have a kid then get pregnant again 3 months later.. Psychos if you ask me.
Well, we'll see what this weekend brings.. My doctor has veto'd a birth anytime between noonish and bedtime on mother's day--he doesn't want to leave his BBQ to deliver a baby. I tend to agree, since I don't like the idea of some unknown doctor coming and looking at the Netherlands...I kinda would like someone I have built a rapport with. So, everyone continue to keep your fingers crossed, and hopefully it won't be too much longer....I know all are very anxious for this baby to be here, but none more than the parents:)

Our first post
OK, so after seeing Colleen posting about life at home with Jackson, I thought I would get a leg up and start BEFORE the baby was born (no offense Colleen, I never would have done this if you didn't).
So for those who haven't been keeping in the loop, I am currently 39 weeks and 1 day pregnant. I have 6 more days to go until my due date, and it can't come soon enough! i have been off work since March 10th because of high blood pressure, and the last few weeks have been filled with uncertainty in terms of the birth of this child. First I was going to term, then I was definitely going to be induced at 37 weeks, then 37 weeks came and I was told "no, your body isn't ready yet" and now we are just playing the waiting game.
I saw the doctor on Wed. May 9th, and the baby has officially dropped, so it shouldn't be too much longer. I went for my ultrasound today, which estimated the baby's weight at 8lbs, 11oz, however, they couldn't get a certain measurement, so this weight could be wrong. I go back to the doctor on Tuesday, and we'll be discussing either induction or planned c-section. With the baby only being about 9 lbs, it looks like I might be induced next week.
Dan is going crazy...He is so very excited, and can't wait for the baby to be here. He has been moping everyday that passes, especially since he has to drive me around to all my appointments (i'm to big to get behind the wheel now). The multitude of visits to maternity for tests and then not coming home with a baby is starting to wear on him I think (although I am starting to get frustrated too). He is like a little kid at christmas, who doesn't know what day it is--just that christmas is coming soon. It is actually quite cute.
So, I'm hoping that my next post will be that the baby is born, but if not, then it will be next week after I go to the doctor...Everyone keep your fingers crossed that the baby comes this weekend!
